MADE FOR T.V.

THE GUARDIAN

How do predictable movies ever make it to the big screen? Predictable movies belong on Lifetime where the viewer doesn't expect much in the realm of awe-inspiring dialogue and great acting. The Guardian tells the familiar yarn of a young cocky coast guard swimmer wanna-be, played by Ashton Kutcher, trying to survive basic training while attempting to impress his hard-ass drill Sergent, played by Kevin Costner...Has anyone heard of AN OFFICER AND A GENTLEMEN?

It's not that the acting is horrible...It's the story. We've seen this all before. While the beginning credits rolled I told my wife "we already know what's gonna happen in this movie....the training will be tough, the teacher and student will butt heads, they'll eventually bond, save some people and someone will die". My clairvoyant abilities didn't fail me...I was right on the money.

THE GUARDIAN is not awful...It's just not great. I give it a "5".

Kevin Costner has been around for a while. He is a great actor who has been in his share of great movies as well as flops. Movies.com credits Costner with 36 movies. I gave 11 of those movies a rating of 8 or higher. Below are my top 5 Costner flicks.

1. JFK
2. The Untouchables
3. Open Range
4. No Way Out
5. Dances With Wolves
